The American Cup is an 8-player double elimination knockout taking
place from 17-26 March in the St. Louis Chess Club. The matches will be played over
two classical (90min + 30s increment) games in the Champions and two rapid
(25+10) games in the Elimination bracket. If tied, rapid (10+5) playoffs are
held and, if still tied, an Armageddon game (5 vs 4 minutes, with draw odds for
Black). In the end the winner of the Champions bracket will face the winner of

The 9th Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez "Ciudad de
Linares" was organized under the direction of Luis Rentero Suarez. The
number of players was increased from 12 to 14, and with the participation of
both players from the Kasparov - Karpov World Championship Match (1990) (which
ended December 31st), it was the first ever Category 17 event (average rating
2651-2675). The players were: Garry Kasparov (Elo ranked #1 in the world),
Anatoly Karpov (#2), Boris Gelfand (#3), Vassily Ivanchuk (#4), Mikhail
Gurevich (#6), Jaan Ehlvest (#7), Valery Salov (#9), Alexander Beliavsky (#10),
Gata Kamsky (#13), Viswanathan Anand (#14), Jan Timman (#16), Jonathan Speelman
(#25), Artur Yusupov (#31), and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (#40). Of the top 10
players in the world, only Evgeny Bareev (#5) and Leonid Yudasin (#8) were
missing. Fourteen players had signed up for the event in October, 1990. Two of
them, Nigel Short (#15) and Miguel Illescas Cordoba (#98), were replaced by
Gurevich and Speelman. According to Leontxo García, Illescas was again
"excluded" by Rentero in order to reach Category 17. Salov had played
in Hoogovens (1991) in January. Karpov, Gurevich, Ehlvest and Kamsky had played
in Reggio Emilia A1 (1991), and Beliavsky and Ljubojevic in Reggio Emilia A2
(1991), both in January. Six of the players (Gelfand, Ivanchuk, Anand, Timman,
Speelman and Yusupov) came from the Candidates preliminary matches that ended
in early February.

To have a challenger for World Champion Anatoly Karpov it was
necessary to qualify eight players for the Candidates quarterfinal knockout
matches that would be held in 1980. Viktor Korchnoi and Boris Spassky had
qualified by having reached the Korchnoi vs Spassky Candidates Final 1977/78.
The other six players would qualify from two interzonal tournaments: Riga (this
page), and Rio de Janeiro Interzonal 1979. From Rio, Robert Huebner, Lajos
Portisch and Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian qualified. To play in the interzonals
the players had to qualify from zonal tournaments. For the Riga interzonal,
Miles had qualified from the Amsterdam Zonal 1978 tournament. Grünfeld
qualified from the Lucerne Zonal 1979, Tarjan and Mednis from the US
Championship 1978, Rodriguez from Ito Zonal 1978, Adorjan, Ribli and Gheorghiu
from Warsaw Zonal 1979, Ljubojevic and Bouaziz from Praia da Rocha Zonal 1978,
Tseshkovsky, Romanishin and Kuzmin from Lvov Zonal 1978 and Trois and Riemsdijk
from Tramandai Zonal 1978. (1) Larsen and Polugaevsky qualified from reaching
the Candidates matches in 1977. (2) Mikhail Tal from the host country had a
wild card, which had caused protests in Russia. (3) Roman Hernandez was
originally situated in the draw as no. 1, but on his failure to arrive his name
was withdrawn and the draw was modified. Lubomir Kavalek had qualified from the
USA zone, but due to an injury to a leg, while playing tennis as part of his physical
preparation, he could not travel and his place was taken by Mednis. Vlastimil

The 2023 FIDE World Chess
Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in
Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who
finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion
Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach
7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund
is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers
are allowed until after move 40. Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then
60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a
30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four
25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to
two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are
played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.
